The Restoration Process

Step One: Stop the Source of Water

Immediately we will work to shut off the source of the water causing the damage.  This is when time matters, and all hands are on deck!  Once the water source is contained, we can begin to identify and document the damage caused with a Damage Assessment.

Step Two: Water Removal and the Damage Assessment

Once the water has been shut off, we deploy pump trucks to remove any standing water, set up dehumidifiers and fans to encourage the area to dry.  We then identify and document damaged areas with a Damage Assessment report.  Then we end the day by blocking off any areas of entry to prevent unauthorized entry during the evening hours.

Step Three: Debris Removal

Only after the water is contained, pumped, and dried can we begin to get to work with the removal of debris and restoration services.  We bring in heavy equipment, backhoes and dump trucks to remove the bulk of the destroyed property and allow crews to get further into the dwelling or business to remove smaller parts of the building destroyed by water.

Step Four: Your New Home or Business

Reconstruction, once cleanup has happened, is like building any other structure.  The frame and foundation are repaired if needed and declared to be fit.  The functions of the home are repaired - plumbing, electrical, HVAC, insulation, windows and doors.  Lastly the finishes are added to make it just right - siding, flooring, baseboards and frames.  Unified Restoration Systems will get you back to better than before your water disaster.

You may be asking..."But what is a Damage Assessment?"

The Damage Assessment - the initial onsite estimation of destruction and loss

⦁   The damage assessment is the beginning point for the restoration of a home or business.  It will include photos and descriptions of areas that have received water damage.

⦁   The damage assessment helps the insurance company when Adjusters declare losses and to evaluate payouts for water damage restoration services.

⦁   This ensures that you get a replacement that is at or above the same market value as the objects and possessions that you have lost.

⦁   It may include a time frame estimation of when the work will be completed

Three types of water seen during water damage restoration projects

Clean: Clean water is water from city water pipes, rain, and condensation.  This type of water damage is the easiest to repair and restore because bacteria are not in question and the water is mostly free of contaminants.  The water needs to be pumped out and the home dehumidified to prevent mold growth.  Many items can be saved from clean water damage if dried out quickly.  Dehumidifiers, large fans, and opened windows will speed up the drying process and this equipment is deployed as part of our clean water damage restoration.

Gray: Gray water is water that has been used for some purpose and may still have a way to be rescued again.  This includes used water from laundry and showers, water used to fill toilet bowls (but not used toilet water), and other once-used household wastewater.  It can be more difficult to remove and treat than clean water, clean-up will require the water to be pumped out and dehumidifiers deployed to control mold, and cleaning solutions that will remove any secondary substances distributed by the water like grease, skin cells, food matter, blood, etc.  Some materials may not survive this type of water damage, items like carpets, drywall, and certain types of wooden flooring. But grey water is still not as bad as the last in the category...

Black: Black water is the worst type of water, its dangerous to humans and it will require a licensed professional to remove, treat, and prevent biological growth in the future - Black water damage is not a Do-it-Yourself repair.  It is wastewater that is contaminated by bacteria and dangerous to humans, a few examples are water containing chemical runoff, fecal matter, and/or decaying animals.  Clean up encompasses the same steps for grey water with the addition of sterilization.  This is accomplished by STERAMIST which is a spray system using an ionized hydrogen peroxide mist that is incredibly effective at killing bacteria and viruses.  The mist is supercharged by cold plasma, making the particles very fine and deadly to bacteria.  Meaning full coverage and full sterilization wherever the system is aimed.  Depending on the size of the flooding and the spread of the black water, many parts of the building may need to be replaced, such as drywall, flooring, carpets, and anything else porous that absorbed the contaminated black water.

**Note that even though these three categories are named by color, the color of the water will not necessarily be black or grey, it can be completely contaminated and still appear clear. For example: Ocean water is considered black water because of the dead fish and organisms found within it.**

What are some immediate steps to take when water or flood damage is occurring?

1.   Capture any water that is pouring or dripping to avoid further spread, only if you're able to do so safely - think about Clear, Gray and Black water types

2.   Turn off the source of water, only if you're able to do so safely - think about Clear, Gray and Black water types - Turn valves off, use shut off switches for main water lines if you have access, etc.

3.   Call a 24hr professional restoration company like Unified Restoration Systems for fast emergency response and restoration services

4.   Plan a temporary location where you can stay while the flooding damage is assessed, and the home or business is repaired
