FIRE DAMAGE

Thirty Years of Repairing Fire Damaged Homes and Businesses in NE Ohio

FIRE DAMAGE RESTORATION IN THE GREATER AKRON AREA

Fire damage is one of the worst types of damage that can occur to a home or business

What isn't burned by the flames themselves, will be compromised with smoke damage, smoke odors, and ash covering every leftover inch, which is a whole other type of hazard.  Water damage will also be present from putting the fire out, this will need to be pumped out and dehumidified properly so that mold does not form.  There may be structural damages, seen or unseen, that require expert care to discover and repair, and there is a lot of clean up required.

The Fire Restoration Process

The first step after putting out the fire is to remove any standing water left in the home or office.  We use large pump trucks that move massive amounts of water, and where most needed, deploy fans and dehumidifiers to areas that are wet but not damaged by flames - If the entire building is declared as a loss, drying and dehumidifying are not applicable because the structure cannot be saved as it is.  Next, we board up entry points to the home or office building to prevent unauthorized entry.

Once we finish spotting areas of concern and blocking off entry to outsiders, we create your unique damage assessment report, in which we take all the images of the fire and water damage and determine the total damage caused by the fire to your property along with the value of it.  The report also helps to collaborate with insurance companies, providing valuable documentation of each type of damage, to ensure a fair settlement is paid out.  Once the damage assessment is done, we can get to work.

Frame and Foundation Repair in a Fire Damage Building

After the damage assessment report is completed, the heavy lifting starts.  Heavy machinery and dump trucks will remove and haul away the rubble and parts that cannot be saved in the home or business.

This step is important because it gets us to where we can see the bare-bones structure and begin with reconstruction of the most critical architecture, the foundation and frame of the building.

Machinery is brought in to dehumidify the wet areas so that mold does not begin to grow.  Smoke odors are removed with specialized ventilation machines, and our team does a deep cleaning of the areas with soot and ash.  After the final smoke damage clean up, we can move onto restoring functions to the home or business.

Restoring Function to the Fire Damage Home, Business, or Office

Once the frame and foundation are cleaned, repaired, and declared fit, we can begin on the equally important functions of the building: the plumbing, electrical, HVAC, insulation, windows and doors.

  • Plumbing made from copper, or the much older galvanized steel, will general be alright after heat and flame damage but will still be inspected for damages.  PVC and PEX pipes take damage from heat and flames and melt, meaning these will need to be thoroughly inspected and replaced with new hoses, pipes, and fittings.

  • Electrical wires have a coating on them, to protect against crossed currents, prevent corrosion, and increase the lifespan of the wire inside.  These coatings will melt under high heat, and so all electrical connections need to be tested for shorts and inspected for visual damage, replacing those that are damaged beyond safe functionality.

  • The HVAC system is next on our list of functions, and needs to be thoroughly cleaned inside and outside, because no one wants a blast of soot whenever they turn on the air!  We employ vacuums with massive suction capabilities, and wands with bristles or belts that spin rapidly and dislodge any clinging particles.  Then, cleaning agents are added that kill lingering odors inside the duct work, ensuring that only good, clean air will be pumped into your rebuilt home.

  • The insulation in the building will be inspected and all burned and smoky sections removed and replaced, some insulation types have higher melting points and are not destroyed by water, all of this will be taken into consideration.  After removing all the bad, smoke-filled insulation, new insulation fit for rough, Ohio winters will be reapplied to the insides of walls, around ducts, in the basement, attic, and crawlspaces, and every other area of the home or business.  Finally, a blower door test will make sure that it is up to all current standards for air sealing specifications in the home or office.

  • The last phase of the functional aspects of the building are the windows and doors.  Fires will cause glass to crack at the least and its possible for heat damage glass to shatter into millions of tiny fragments later down the line with the smallest of touches.  For this reason, your windows and doors will be inspected for any damage and replaced with new, comparable windows and doors where needed.

The Finishing Touches

Finally, the finishes can be added: the siding, the flooring, the baseboards and window framing.  Once these are added the building is nearly ready to be turned back over to the owner and the restoration project is almost completed. These finishes are some of the first areas burned by flames because they're mostly wooden or plastic-based and because of their open exposure in the home or office.

Fortunately, during this step, much of the work can be done at the same time as other work.  The siding can be done from the outside while carpenters add flooring, baseboards, and window frames and as one job completes, the crew is able to swap the rooms they're working in to complete these finishing touches quickly and efficiently.
