A Consumer Guide to Restoration Jargon

An Image of a 'Board up' by Unified Restoration Systems. There is a hole in a brick wall that needs to be covered to protect the property, so we board it up!

Board ups, contents cleaning, extraction, pack-outs and put-backs...um what?

That jumble of words in the heading above are some of the most common actions that Unified Restoration Systems performs on a job-by-job basis.  And so that our customers can understand more about our industry, we thought we would break down and explain just what they each mean.

Every industry uses specific wording to speak about their particular commercial enterprise.  With lawyers its commonly known as 'legalese', a combination of technical words, court processes, and abbreviations that make it hard for those not-in-the-know to understand.

Construction related enterprises are in a similar place, foremen bark orders about...well most have no idea, and in our specific niche of the woods, Emergency Restoration and Remediation, its no different, we have words for the things that we do that almost no one else uses.

To help our customers out, we wanted to make a little guide, so that anyone can easily find out just what we're talking about!  And you can always ask us while we're at your home or business!

  • Board Ups: When a home or business has had a fire, flood, or storm damage, many times the windows will be shattered, broken, or missing entirely.  There could be an actual hole in the structure and doors may not be useful or even present.  This is when a Board up is most used.  We secure plywood boards, stamped with our logo, over any entrances, broken windows, holes, or other openings so that prying eyes, young children, and thieves cannot easily enter and to prevent accidental injury to any party.

  • Extraction: Extraction refers to standing water in the home or business that needs to be removed with a vacuum specifically made for the task.  Unified Restoration Systems has the equipment to remove both large-scale and small-scale flooding.  Extraction is also done by dehumidifying the area, and placement of large fans in the room to encourage evaporation.  This reduces the chance that mold can form, because when water damage happens, mold damage is often right behind it, if not taken care of in an appropriate time frame.

  • Contents Cleaning: Valuable objects and memorabilia found in businesses or homes can often be restored to new or near-new by our Damage Mitigation Team.  We employ masters of object restoration, who use state-of-the-art techniques to bring the objects, even clothing, back from disaster.  This includes: smoke damage removal, smoke odor removal, reconstruction and enhancement, texturing, molding, and more.  It would fill the whole page if we listed everything that our Damage Mitigation Team can do!

  • Pack-out: When a home or business has structural damage that needs to be restored to functionality, the contents of the building must be removed to give our construction team the space they need to perform the work.  This is when we perform a pack-out, which means moving everything that isn't attached to the floor out of the space and into a storage unit.  Items will be safely stored in climate controlled unit until the restoration construction is finished.  Once finished we reverse the process in whats called a....

  • Put-back: When structural restorations and the finishing touches are complete, its time to move the contents back into the home or office.  We will arrange transport of your goods back to your address and place them back in your newly restored property!

Now that you know more about some of our most popular work and the jargon that identifies it, you'll be able to keep up with the restoration team as they bark orders while restoring your property!

We hope you never have to experience a property disaster, but if one occurs, give Unified Restoration Systems a call at any time of the day or night, (234) 571-2005.  We'll get a team to your door quickly and begin saving your valuable property!
